Spirit in Action Small Business Fund

The SIA Small Business Fund is a prayerfully coordinated process offering an initial grant of $100 per business group, then $50 after three months.  Hundreds of people in developing countries are growing in self-sufficiency  and  hope through  this vital program.
Spirit in Action is deeply grateful to the volunteer coordinators who are so graciously serving God and their communities:

Democratic Republic of Congo - Jacob Lipandasi
  Benoit Malenge
India -  Chandra Ezekiel
  Victoria Rani
Kenya -  Sister Mary Cherop
Malawi -  Canaan Gondwe
Nigeria - Ofonime Nkoko
  Rose Ekong
Philippines - Rose Zafra
Uganda - Godfrey Matovu
  Christopher Musana

The coordinators give the business groups training in establishing and running their businesses, record-keeping, as well as decision-making as a group, consensus agreement and praying together.
There are many joys as well as challenges for these coordinators. They receive great satisfaction knowing that through God's grace many families are coming up from deep poverty and are now able to feed and educate their children as well as improve their homes and communities.
Challenges include complications in the process of funding transfers and banking, drought, illness among business groups, and illness and death of animals. The coordinators lead their groups prayerfully, compassionately and creatively, finding solutions amongst the challenges.
Please enjoy these pictures giving you a sense of some of these inspiring small businesses.

The vital Morningstar Program for street children is sponsored by the Assumption Sisters of Eldoret and coordinated by Sister Mary Cherop. The children come each morning to Morningstar for breakfast and to change into their school uniforms, return for lunch and again after school before returning to their slum dwellings. They are lovingly nourished and encouraged by the Sisters and through this program are given hope for lives beyond wandering the streets.

Learning the joy of purposeful work in your own shop

When we visited Kenya in August of 2005, Dennis Johnson, SIA board president, Aileen Gillem, SIA volunteer, and Marsha Johnson, SIA administrator were privileged to meet Sister Mary and the children of Morningstar. As a result of hearing from Sister Mary about the needs of the families of the street children, SIA is now sponsoring businesses involving the parents, giving them the opportunity to rise above poverty and provide better lives for their families. We are grateful to Sister Mary and the entire Morningstar community that we can share together in this way.  Enjoy these pictures of their SIA Small Business Fund businesses.
