CFO INTERNATIONAL
Spirit in Action has its roots in Camps Farthest Out
International (CFOI). Del Anderson, SIA’s founder, is president emeritus of
CFOI and Jim Thomas, founding board member of SIA, was also a past president
of CFOI. Many of SIA’s original contacts were from Del and Jim’s
associations with CFOI.
This CFOI website has a wonderful selection of the
writings of Glenn Clark (founder of CFO) and other CFO leaders including
Frank Laubach of Laubach Literacy.
ECOLOGY ACTION
Ecology Action, founded by John Jeavons, is a
non-profit organization that promotes sustainable agriculture systems and
local food production. SIA uses materials from Ecology Action and orders
books and seeds for our correspondents.
With John Jeavons’ permission, SIA has summarized the
essential aspects of his well-researched method of bio-sustainable
gardening. We send these materials to our correspondents and also consult
with the Ecology Action staff when we have questions.
Ecology Action also has a site in Kitale, Kenya called
Manor House in where SIA refers East African contacts for assistance.
BOUNTIFUL
GARDENS
Bountiful Gardens, which sells organic and untreated,
open-pollinated seeds, is associated with Ecology Action. SIA seeks advice
from Bountiful Gardens as well as orders their seeds.
EDUCATIONAL
CONCERNS FOR HUNGER ORGANIZATION
ECHO (Educational Concerns for Hunger Organization) is
a non-profit, Christian organization dedicated to the fight against world
hunger. ECHO is a wonderful source for books, pamphlets, seeds and expert
advice. We consult ECHO with our questions and refer our correspondents to
ECHO when seeking specialized information on seeds, growing conditions, and
agricultural questions.
TREES FOR
THE FUTURE
Trees for the Future is a non-profit organization
initiating and supporting agroforestry self-help projects in cooperation
with groups and individuals in developing countries. These projects
increase crop yields and help maintain the water table. They fight
deforestation, erosion and global warming.
We purchase tree seeds from Trees for the Future as
well as seek their expert advice on what types of trees grow best in
particular environments.
TREES FOR LIFE
Trees for Life is an excellent source for tree seeds
and all related information. Their website also has an extensive link
section for organizations addressing environmental, health and hunger
concerns.
SOLAR COOKERS
INTERNATIONAL
Solar Cookers International is SIA’s source for sending
solar cookers to developing countries and provides detailed guidelines for
building your own solar cooker.
